There are 18 Councillors who give their
time and effort voluntarily and receive no payment whatsoever.
The Town Clerk, John Ingham, his assistant, the Tourist Information
staff, the office staff and the outdoor workers are all salaried
staff or wage earning. The statutory duties include management
of the cemetery, the allotments, St Michael's churchyard and
some of the Town's open spaces and parks. This Council also
provides the Tourist Information Centre and administers several
trusts.
Saturday Surgery
There is a Town Councillor on duty every Saturday
morning from 10am to 12 noon at the Council Chamber, Town
Council Offices, to assist any members of the public or answer
any questions on Local Government matters.
